The road ran from Boulogne-sur-Mer through Arras, Bavay, Tongeren, Maastricht, and Heerlen to J\u00fclich and Cologne. Via Belgica was an important part of a large and complex network of (water)ways that extended to the farthest corners of the Roman Empire. At key junctions, the Romans built guard posts or small villages that grew into larger settlements.\r\n\r\nSeveral villas, villages, cities, and burial mounds are scattered throughout the landscape.
