In 2015, archaeologists discovered remains of the road along the outer ring of Parkstad.\r\n\r\nRemains of this Roman road have also been found in Heerlen. The town lay at the crossroads of the Via Belgica and the Via Traiana. This made it grow into a flourishing trading centre where countless travellers found lodging every day.\r\n\r\nIt was a road network on an unprecedented scale. Travel became faster than ever, armies could move with lightning speed, and goods from distant regions could reach our area.\r\n\r\nBut the connection was more than just a physical road: it also carried Roman culture.
