After Licinius fell from grace, the stone was re-inscribed, this time with a dedication to Emperor Constantine and his sons. There is a conspicuous gap in this text: it contained the name of the emperor's eldest son, Caesar Crispus. After he fell victim to a political intrigue and was executed, all memory of him was to be erased. Therefore, his name was also removed from the inscription.\r\n\r\nHistory carved in stone: The Roman milestone from Z\u00fclpich is the only Roman milestone from that period found in the Rhineland to date that has survived completely and without major damage. The inscription on the stone names the current Roman emperor. Besides the most recent inscription from the 4th century, the stone also shows traces of two older inscriptions: The oldest, completely removed, probably dates back to the 3rd century.\r\n\r\nThe stone is considered a prime example of how even smaller towns in the Roman provinces participated in major political events and reacted immediately to new developments. It was discovered during excavation work in the 1960s on Nideggener Stra\u00dfe (Agrippastra\u00dfe Cologne\u2013Trier) in the Hoven district of Z\u00fclpich.\r\n\r\nThe milestone is actually a league stone: it indicated the distance from Tolbiacum (Z\u00fclpich) to Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne) as 16 leagues, a Celtic unit of length commonly used in the region at that time.
