In Roman times, however\u2014when the spoil heap did not yet exist\u2014the Via Belgica passed through an extensive settlement from west to east over a distance of 850 meters. It was established as early as the 1st century AD and covered an area of approximately 17 hectares. Its Roman name is not known.\r\n\r\nThe settlement consisted of groups of timber-framed buildings spread out on both sides of the Roman long-distance road and\u2014unlike other vici\u2014not directly adjacent to it. It is noteworthy that the Via Belgica ran through the settlement with a width of 25 meters and, unlike usual practice, did not become narrower within the settlement.\r\n\r\nJudging by the numerous finds of slag and non-ferrous metal remains, the inhabitants of the vicus were primarily metalworking craftsmen. Other main sources of income were likely trade and the provisioning of travelers. In the 3rd century AD, the settlement was abandoned and subsequently fell into oblivion.\r\n\r\nHow densely this area was settled in Roman times has been demonstrated by multi-year, large-scale investigations carried out by the LVR Office for Archaeological Heritage Management in the Rhineland. The locations of nearby Roman settlement sites are indicated by the distribution of finds across the fields. To the west of Gut Blaustein, as well as along the Via Belgica toward Boscheln, traces of additional Roman buildings have been found, which likely had a close functional connection to the Roman road.
