The Via Belgica was flanked on both sides by continuous buildings. Long rectangular strip houses were positioned with their narrow side facing the street; a shared colonnade (porticus) ran along the street and provided pedestrians with a covered walkway for protection. Comparisons with other vici in Lower Germania suggest that individual houses were at least 25 meters long. It can be assumed that the rear area of the plots in the vicus of Elsdorf was also used as gardens or for commercial production, for example by potters.\r\n\r\nApproximately 90 meters from the Via Belgica there was a Gallo-Roman ambulatory temple. This sanctuary consisted of a rectangular room measuring 8 by 10 meters, which was enclosed by an ambulatory about four meters wide. Whether the ambulatory, as is often the case, was designed as a columned or enclosed walkway is unknown, since only the foundation of the temple has survived.\r\n\r\nWhile the house buildings were aligned at right angles to the Via Belgica, the more distant Gallo-Roman ambulatory temple and other nearby structures show a different orientation. Apparently, these buildings were not aligned with the Via Belgica, but rather with a side street that has not yet been identified. Accordingly, the vicus of Elsdorf would have been located at a fork in the road in Roman times.
