It was built in the 12th century. Experts assume that a Roman road post already stood here in antiquity. The first recorded owner of Rimburg Castle was the highwayman and robber knight Mulrepas in 1276. Shortly thereafter, Duke John I of Brabant had the complex completely destroyed; the lords of Mulrepas rebuilt it at the end of the 13th century.\r\n\r\nA good 200 years later, in 1498, Emperor Maximilian I elevated Rimburg Castle to the status of a free imperial lordship, but in the 16th century Charles V declared it a Brabantine domain. For over 100 years, the castle has been owned by the von Brauchitsch family, who in 1899 gave the building a Baroque fa\u00e7ade, raised the southwestern flanking tower, and crowned it with a dome. In addition, the outer bailey was rebuilt.\r\n\r\nAt this location, where the Via Belgica crossed the Wurm, a roadside settlement (vicus) developed in the 1st century and continued to exist until the 4th century\u2014the vicus of Rimburg.\r\n\r\nThe first archaeological excavations took place here between 1926 and 1930. During these, the foundations of strip houses along the road and several pottery kilns were uncovered. When archaeologists investigated the crossing of the Wurm along the Via Belgica, they discovered a wooden bridge about six meters wide, for which two construction phases could be identified. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, further strip houses were discovered during excavations on the Dutch side. The entire settlement covered at least four hectares on both sides of the Wurm. The strip houses were located directly on the street, while further half-timbered buildings stood facing away from it.","slideshow":[23477,23481,23489,23493],"ontdekken_video_box":{"ontdekken_video_titel":"","ontdekken_video_paragraaf":"","ontdekken_video_iframe":""},"ontdekken_360_box":{"ontdekken_360_titel":"","ontdekken_360_paragraaf":"","ontdekken_360_iframe":""},"doen":null,"weten":[{"vraag":"First photo: Rimburg Castle.
