Two other Roman cinerary chests had previously been found on the same building plot, at 51 Stampstraat. These were very plain and had also been looted. This third chest likewise showed evidence of looting, with holes in both the lid and one of the short sides. However, stones covering the grave had fallen into the chest, preserving the cremated remains and several grave goods.\r\n\r\nThe grave goods included gold jewellery, such\ud558\uba74 as a necklace, rings and an earring, as well as a small silver mirror, a tear bottle, a hexagonal glass bottle and several other objects. All these grave goods are now held in the collection of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. Yet the most remarkable feature of the chest was not its contents, but its interior.\r\n\r\nThe cinerary chest is unique because of the high-relief sculpture decorating its interior, depicting a furnished room. One side of a villa is also shown inside the chest. Villas are usually represented from the front, with a colonnaded gallery flanked by two small towers. Based on an on-site reconstruction, the sculptor appears to have depicted the villa from the deceased woman\u2019s viewpoint. Perhaps her favourite room in the house was situated behind that wall.\r\n\r\nA woman, probably the deceased, rests on a dining couch. She is surrounded by furniture and decorative objects. Some of the grave goods are also depicted inside the chest. Other grave goods\u2014possibly stolen\u2014may once have stood in the niches. The villa shown is probably the Roman villa of Simpelveld-De Molt, situated around 150 metres away and believed to have been her home. This exceptional archaeological discovery offers a direct glimpse into Roman life. Replicas of the furniture depicted inside the chest\u2014a cabinet, chair, small table and couch\u2014are displayed around it in the visitor centre.\r\n\r\nThe cabinet is particularly noteworthy because it was made using techniques also practised during the Roman period. Its construction consists entirely of traditional wooden joints, without any modern fasteners. Even the doors are fitted with hinges based on Roman examples. The cabinet therefore offers an authentic impression of Roman craftsmanship and furniture-making.\r\n<h3>History of the excavation<\/h3>\r\nIn 1930, while building his house, miner Andreas Wierts came across three Roman cinerary chests. The third became widely known as the \u2018Sarcophagus of Simpelveld\u2019. For a time, visitors could view the chest at the place where it had been found for an admission fee of 10 cents. It was eventually purchased by the National Museum of Antiquities for 8,500 Dutch guilders.
