From far and wide they gather to discover the latest developments, to inspire each other, and to network. This year, the border city of The Hague was the place to be. No fewer than 650 archaeologists took part in the conference."},{"acf_fc_layout":"tekst_foto","tekst":"The extensive programme appealed to many, but one theme stood out above all: participation.\r\nMore and more archaeologists want to actively engage with residents and explore their shared past together. The increased focus by governments on co-funding participation projects (and less on purely research-based ones) also plays a major role in this trend.\r\n\r\nBut how do you actually do it?\r\nParticipation is an easy word to use for policymakers and politicians \u2014 but successfully putting it into practice is quite another matter.","foto":10693},{"acf_fc_layout":"foto_tekst","foto":12247,"tekst":"In a session with five speakers, chaired by Saskia Stevens (Constructing The Limes), participants explored the added value of citizen participation and citizen science in archaeological research.\r\nNone other than Professor Suzie Thomas from the University of Antwerp opened the session with a theoretical framework: What is participation? Why is it important? What are its effects? And what are its pitfalls?\r\n\r\nThen came several inspiring case studies: Heel Heerlen Graaft! \u2013 Rimburg gr\u00e4bt\/graaft!, Everyone an Archaeologist, and From Auxilia to Legion.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"tekst_foto","tekst":"It all began with the dream of regional archaeologist Hilde Vanneste (Parkstad): \u201cI want to excavate the past of Coriovallum together with the people of Heerlen.\u201d\r\nOne year after the project Heel Heerlen Graaft! she was invited to present her project \u2014 and its follow-up Rimburg gr\u00e4bt\/graaft! by Via Belgica \u2014 at the national level as an exemplary case. A well-deserved honour for Hilde, Constructing The Limes, NWO, all the partners, RAAP, all participants, and the whole of South Limburg.","foto":12244},{"acf_fc_layout":"foto_tekst","foto":10633,"tekst":"Hilde Vanneste\u2019s tips for a successful participation project:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Ensure a sufficient budget that matches the project\u2019s goals (e.g. Heel Heerlen Graaft! had a budget of \u20ac130,000 \u2014 a large-scale project).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Work with enough partners to expand expertise, capacity, and public support. In this case: Municipality of Heerlen, Constructing The Limes (Utrecht University), NWO, and the Roman Museum.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A project leader is essential \u2014 as an archaeologist, overall organisation and participant communication are not your main tasks.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Create a solid programme of requirements (PVE) and work with certified support.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Give participants enough time to register, get to know the project, and prepare themselves \u2014 and approach them personally.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Offer participants genuine freedom \u2014 that\u2019s what real participation means.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Provide clear feedback on the results.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"tekst_foto","tekst":"So what is the added value of participation in archaeology?\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Together with residents, you expand knowledge of the city\u2019s history.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Public support for heritage grows, strengthening identity development.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Community spirit and social cohesion are enhanced.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nParticipants even coined a new term: \u201csquare-metre friendships\u201d \u2014 perfectly capturing the sense of togetherness.\r\nThe archaeologists themselves were equally enthusiastic, experiencing firsthand the social value of their work.","foto":12085},{"acf_fc_layout":"foto_tekst","foto":12250,"tekst":"Limburg truly made its mark on the national map \u2014 reinforced by the nomination of Bibi Beekman, curator at the Limburgs Museum, for the Archaeological Talent Award of the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE).\r\n\r\nBibi has shown in a remarkable way how to connect historians and archaeologists in an engaging manner, deepening knowledge and fostering collaboration between museums, amateur groups, and historical associations.
