This location offers an extraordinary panorama stretching as far as the Eifel and Ardennes regions. And nearby, almost at your feet, you can see the place that put Simpelveld on the world map thanks to a unique Roman discovery. There, almost 60 metres lower, the funerary urn chest of the Lady of Simpelveld was discovered in 1930.<\/h3>\r\nThe municipality of Simpelveld is now working on combining these two jewels into the Huls(veld) viewpoint. At 200 metres above sea level, it will become one of the highest points in South Limburg, where walkers and cyclists from Simpelveld, the region, and far beyond will find a place to rest. The plans have existed since 2016 but repeatedly encountered setbacks, such as the coronavirus period and slow decision-making. Glass house<\/h3>\r\nAt present, the area is dominated by a car park and terraced divisions. The verdict is that it is not very attractive, and therefore a landscape park will be created that better fits the rolling hillside. The park will feature grassland full of herbs, low fruit trees to preserve the view, walking paths, and a natural playground.\r\n\r\nThe plan also includes a hospitality pavilion with, as its absolute eye-catcher, a life-size replica of the funerary urn chest (also known as a sarcophagus) found at the foot of the hill. The urn chest will be placed inside a glass house that reconstructs the home of the Lady of Simpelveld. On a higher level, the pavilion\u2019s balcony will serve as the viewing platform."},{"acf_fc_layout":"tekst_foto","tekst":"

Spectacular interior<\/h3>\r\nIn December 1930, Andreas Wierts discovered several Roman graves and urns, as well as a sandstone funerary urn chest, during the renovation of his house on Stampstraat. The chest is large: 2.05 metres long with a rather plain exterior. But the interior is spectacular thanks to deeply carved reliefs on all walls. The sculptures depict a woman lying on a bed \u2014 presumably the deceased \u2014 surrounded by household objects such as a table with lion\u2019s paws, a cabinet with panelled doors, glass bottles and amphorae, and a representation of a building, possibly a house or a tomb. Grave goods were found inside the chest, including gold jewellery such as a necklace, several rings, and an earring, as well as a silver mirror. At the bottom of the chest lay the cremated remains of the deceased.
