New Book Brings Together Three Years of Research on the Roman Villa at Voerendaal

Beneath the fields along the Steenweg in Voerendaal lie the remains of the largest Roman villa in the Netherlands. To give an idea of its scale: the colonnade of the villa stretched 150 meters in length, and the granary could store roughly 100,000 kilos of grain. A new book, Villa Voerendaal, from Discovery to Surprising Story, published by the Limburgs Museum in Venlo, brings together the results of three years of research. The texts are highly accessible for both young and old readers.

The publication is linked to the exhibition Rivers Full of Romans. The title refers to the Rhine and the Meuse. A highlight of the exhibition is the sandstone head of the “Lady of Voerendaal,” found on a hill near the Via Belgica. The Lady of Voerendaal serves as a guide, leading visitors through the exhibition.
