Oude Steenstraat, Riemst
With a bit of imagination, you can still picture the Romans sitting here. The Oude Steenstraat in Millen (municipality of Riemst) reminds us of the Roman route. Centuries ago, many Romans passed this place to transport goods from A to B, just as the nearby motorway does today.
The centuries-old road infrastructure allowed soldiers, but also livestock, food, and other economic goods, to be transported by the Romans. All this had a huge impact on the surroundings. The presence of various Roman archaeological sites here, near the Oude Steenstraat, is therefore not unusual.
Around this location, several remains of Roman buildings and villas have been found, including wall fragments and the remains of a real cellar. Moreover, this place has all the features of a Roman landscape: sunken roads, slopes, and a terraced terrain. The name of this street also refers to the Roman past that once unfolded here.
