Jülich Citadel Museum: from Roman Vicus to Renaissance Fortress
The Citadel Museum is a project partner and hotspot for the town of Jülich at VIA VIA. It is dedicated to showing the Roman origins of the town, the history of the Renaissance fortress, and the romantic landscape paintings of the Düsseldorf school of painters! We showcase Jülich’s fascinating history at two locations: in the basement of the citadel, a 16th-century fortress, one can find the permanent exhibition on the town’s history up to the modern era, and in the 19th-century powder magazine of the fortress, the special themed exhibitions take place. We focus on the Düsseldorf School paintings in the Landscape Gallery in the Kulturhaus am Hexenturm. This gallery is dedicated to the work of the famous landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and his influence on the painting of the Düsseldorf School.
Partners in VIA VIA
Our team of archaeologists, historians, and museum educators is now working on an exhibition about the Roman vicus (settlement) “Iuliacum” (the Roman predecessor of Jülich!) as part of the VIA VIA project, with a special focus on continuities into the Middle Ages and beyond.
