Constructing the Limes: Studying the Lower Germanic Limes
Utrecht University’s Department of History and Art History is home to Constructing the Limes (C-Limes), a five-year research project (2021–2026) that explores the role and lasting impact of the Roman Empire’s northern border, known as the Lower Germanic Limes. This border once ran through parts of what are now the Netherlands and western Germany. The C-Limes team brings together experts in Roman history, archaeology, and heritage to better understand how this border shaped the region, both in ancient times and today
Partners in VIA VIA
As a scientific partner, Utrecht University collects and connects archaeological and historical information from the area to build a more complete and more inclusive picture of the Roman past. We use the expertise and discoveries from the C-Limes project to enrich VIA VIA’s storyline, bringing to life a novel, diverse, and engaging narrative that reflects the wide range of people and cultures that made up Roman society!
