We will never know exactly which people in Roman times worked on the roads, who built the bridges, who crossed our land, and who settled here. What we do know is that two thousand years later, the Province of Limburg and the municipalities of Maastricht, Meerssen, Valkenburg aan de Geul, Voerendaal, Simpelveld, Heerlen, and Kerkrade are the driving forces behind the project that makes the Roman past of this region visible and tangible.
The partners have worked on a digital knowledge bank, information panels, a book, Roman festivals and exhibitions. Museums and entrepreneurs also devote explicit attention to the Roman past. By joining forces an overarching platform has been created that guides residents and visitors of South Limburg to both existing and new experiences.
All these experiences are the achievement of the Friends of Via Belgica: a group of dedicated entrepreneurs, volunteers, institutions, and governments. Together with the initiators of the project they put the Via Belgica and the Roman landscape of South Limburg on the map. By working hand in hand they make Via Belgica a true project of connection.
