The archaeological remains of the Civitas Tungrorum

Gallo-Romeins Museum, Tongeren

When a city is blessed with such rich historical and prehistoric treasures, it is only natural to want to share them with the world. That is exactly what the Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren does.

“What follows is always connected with what came before,” said the Roman emperor-philosopher Marcus Aurelius. Today, this is the museum’s guiding motto. Since 2018, a permanent exhibition has been on display that offers insights into human life in the region we now call Limburg. It tells the chronological story from prehistory to the end of Roman times.

Tongeren, the oldest city in Belgium, was founded by the Romans in 10 BC. The Romans influenced nearly every aspect of daily life: building techniques, food culture, personal care, fashion, law, and religion. Both the permanent and temporary exhibitions allow you to travel back in time in different ways.
