Maastricht: visibility and experience of Roman Heritage
As part of the VIA VIA tourism project, Maastricht Museum and Centre Céramique, together with partners from across the Euregion, bring the Roman past to life. The result is a unique route full of Roman highlights, connecting nine locations in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Maastricht Museum in Centre Céramique is one of them!
An engaging Roman experience
For Maastricht, the centerpiece is a sculpture of a Roman funerary monument depicting a trading scene: the importance of the small Roman vicus (settlement: the predecessor of present-day Maastricht!) at the crossroads of land and waterways captured in a single image.
The rest of the presentation will build on the storyline developed jointly by all partners. Through an interactive screen, the CrossCultureTimeline, visitors can explore all the entrepreneurs and partners of VIA VIA, along with their hotspots, key objects, and locations, all connected by one common thread: the Roman road!
From the museum, links are also made to other Roman hotspots in Maastricht, such as the Roman site beneath Hotel Derlon and archaeological finds across the city, including the remains of the Roman bridge. An educational component will also be included, allowing visitors to see and touch Roman replicas (and more!).
Partners in VIA VIA
For Maastricht Museum, the cross-border cooperation fostered by VIA VIA is essential given Maastricht’s location between two countries and three language areas. Free from today’s borders, our shared (Roman) past is given a sustainable, scientific foundation as well as an interactive, public-oriented experience!
“We are proud to highlight this important piece of history in collaboration with all our colleagues and partners. By telling these connecting and multi-voiced stories together, across national borders, we can reveal the bigger picture. We aim to serve as a (Roman) bridge between Belgian, Dutch, and German partners. And for those who can’t wait: there is already so much to discover about the Romans in our Maastricht Museum!”
