Weißhauspark Roman Cemetery in Cologne

Weißhauspark Roman Cemetery

The Roman road southwest, just outside the city gates, was lined on both sides with cemeteries for several kilometers. From Bobstrasse, through Weißhauspark, to Sülzburgstrasse stretched a vast necropolis with over 1600 identified graves and burial structures. Many contained valuable grave goods: ornate glassware, luxury metal items, amber, or jet. These are now mostly housed in the Romano-Germanic Museum in Cologne.

In park-like surroundings at Luxemburger Straße 201 in Cologne-Sülz stands the Weißhaus, the former summer residence of the abbots of St. Pantaleon. Built in the 17th century on the foundations of a medieval predecessor, the small Baroque palace is surrounded by an artificial pond fed by the Duffesbach stream.

Destroyed in World War II, the manor house was rebuilt in the old style and is now privately owned.
