In Roman times, the Via Belgica ran right through South Limburg, connecting the French coastline with the eastern border of the Roman Empire near Cologne. The Via Belgica was part of the vast road network the Romans built throughout their empire. Thanks to these roads, trade flourished, messages from Rome could be spread with great speed, and Roman legionaries could move very quickly whenever necessary.

All those roads also connected the diverse regions the Romans had conquered over time — from Northwest Europe to the Middle East, and from North Africa to Eastern Europe. The roads carried people, trade goods, and customs from across the Roman Empire. Thanks to this network, we can rightfully call the Roman Empire the first multicultural society in our history.

During this cycling tour, you will discover the Via Belgica between Meerssen and Valkenburg aan de Geul. Along the way, you will stop at several locations. In the brochure, you will find information and an assignment for each stop (ages 12–14). You can download and print the brochure here to take with you on the road.
