The Roman Museum Heerlen: Gateway to the Roman region
The Roman Museum is an innovative museum in Heerlen that, starting in autumn 2027, will immerse visitors in daily life during Roman times!* It shows how strongly the Roman world is still connected to our own. The Romans namely introduced numerous innovations that permanently transformed society between the Meuse and the Rhine, traces of which can still be seen today. They were surprisingly far ahead for their time!
The highlight of the museum is the Roman bathhouse: the oldest surviving stone building in the Netherlands. Alongside the bathhouse, a wide variety of objects tell the story of daily life in the Roman Empire. Not as something distant from us, but as a source of insight, imagination, and connection. Heritage is brought to life here through innovative technology, interactive exhibitions, and space for diverse perspectives. Visitors are also directed toward the surrounding landscape, encouraging them to discover Roman sites they may never have seen before!
