HEERLEN – Potter Lucius – Discover the richness of nature – 5 km

Around 2,000 years ago, a settlement emerged at the crossroads of two important Roman roads: the Via Belgica and the Via Traiana. Over time, this settlement grew into the Roman town of Coriovallum, present-day Heerlen. Numerous archaeological discoveries provide us with a vivid picture of Roman life in the town. The centre of social life was the bathhouse, surrounded by shops, inns, workshops, and pottery studios.

Thanks to the discovery of a beautiful inscribed jug, we even know the name of one of the potters: Lucius. Lucius is our guide. He introduces us to the town and the surrounding countryside. He tells us about his work as a potter, his customers, his friends, and his love for Amaka. Through his eyes, we discover a lively town where people from all corners of the world come together — a place where people live, work, and seek relaxation. Much will feel familiar, because Coriovallum, the Roman town, eventually gave way to Heerlen, the central city of the Parkstad region.
