With the official unveiling on Sunday, September 8, at 5 p.m., Heerlen becomes even more of a mural capital and the Roman Quarter even more Roman. Next to the future Roman Museum, the Italian artist Gionata Gesi, known as Ozmo, is creating a new, house-high mural.

Residents of the Roman Quarter have been involved over the past months in choosing one of three designs for the new mural. Gionata Gesi presented his designs in June and has adjusted the favorite design in detail according to suggestions from residents and archaeologists. The artist found inspiration in the Roman goddess Fortuna, who was worshipped in Heerlen. The famous jug by potter Lucius with the inscription Amaka also plays a role.

The new mural is made possible thanks to Museum Murals, a national project of the Mauritshuis in The Hague. For 20 museums, 20 artists are creating 20 murals. The VriendenLoterij, the Thermenmuseum / the Roman Museum, and the Italian Embassy contribute to the costs.
