Fancy a Roman wedding?

B en B Gillishof, Bocholtz

The beautiful Gillishof farmstead is a peaceful place where holidaymakers can take a step back. You can stay overnight here and discover Roman Bocholtz. From time to time, the tranquility is broken for a Roman wedding.

During the Roman wedding you relive Roman times: Roman clothing, Roman wine, a special barbecue, Roman finger food to eat with your hands, Italian music, and a symbolic ceremony. A ritual with ropes and hands symbolizes the moral and emotional bond between two people. This can be official with a registrar, but it doesn’t have to be – also a Roman custom.

Gillishof lies in Roman territory, also called the “Roman Valley.” During gardening work, a perfectly preserved Roman oil flask surfaced. Nearby, remains of several Roman villas have been found, as well as a cinerary chest complete with grave goods.

Fun to know

Marrying with or without the hand
The Romans were practical people. They already realized that marriage in community of property was not always the best option. That’s why they knew two forms of marriage: cum manu (with the hand) and sine manu (without the hand). Cum manu can roughly be compared to community of property, while sine manu is similar to marriage under prenuptial conditions. Instead of exchanging rings, the Romans had a ritual with ropes, literally and figuratively tying two people together.
