Roman gardens
Villa de Proosdij, Voerendaal
Nowhere else can Roman South Limburg be seen, tasted, felt, and smelled as vividly as at Villa de Proosdij. The highlight is the Roman gardens. Here, stories of daily life in Roman times unfold in the most unexpected places.
Real Roman chickens walk around, with five toes instead of four. Be careful what you pick in the Garden of Death. After 2000 years, the garden of Pliny the Elder blooms again, just like the fruit trees the Romans once brought to South Limburg. The estate’s own bees collect nectar from ancient plants. From the vineyard, you have a stunning view of Coriovallum (Heerlen).
The estate of Villa de Proosdij was once part of the largest Roman villa in Europe, Villa Voerendaal. Finds such as nails, pottery, and roof tiles reveal Roman activity. Today, the villa, the gardens, and the restaurant with terrace have been created to bring the Roman past back to life.

Fun to know
- Fruity heritage
- When the Romans settled in South Limburg, they brought not only animals but also many of their own plants: almonds, apricots, walnuts, cherries, chestnuts, and plums… That these fruits grow here is thanks entirely to the Romans. In keeping with this fruity heritage, the gardens of Villa de Proosdij feature a Roman orchard.
