The only & oldest vineyard of Belgium
Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen, Riemst
Between Tongeren and Maastricht, along the old Roman road, in the municipality of Riemst lies the only wine castle of Belgium. Not by coincidence, for about 2000 years ago the Romans already discovered that the soil here in Limburg is extremely suitable for vineyards. Reason enough to then fill the whole area with the Vitis Vinifera, the wine grape.
The Wine Castle Genoels-Elderen is not only the only, but also the oldest wine castle in Belgium. When Jaap van Rennes decided in 1991 to breathe new life into the calcareous marl soil at this place, viticulture in Limburg was still in its infancy. In Genoelselderen, the very place where Roman viticulture once flourished, he planted mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines.
Today the estate comprises about 22 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, spread over various plots. With loam on the surface and marl as calcareous subsoil, these delicious wines are the result of a unique and distinctive terroir.
