The Via Belgica discovered
Bergseweg, Voerendaal
If you dig in an area where the Romans once lived, you may suddenly come across interesting finds from the past. This happened during excavation work on the Bergseweg in Voerendaal. When the sewer was being replaced, a part of the well-known Via Belgica was discovered there.
Straight through present-day Voerendaal, the Romans constructed this major road. Heavy ox carts thundered back and forth and Roman soldiers marched up and down it.
In Voerendaal, excavations of the Via Belgica had previously been carried out at the Oude Midweg and the Via Fabrica. Because of these finds, the course of the Via Belgica through Voerendaal can be indicated with a great degree of certainty. With this find on the Bergseweg it became clear that the Romans used Kunrader stone, a type of stone that to this day still defines the appearance of the municipality of Voerendaal.
