By the end of 2027, it should be ready: with The Roman Museum, “a museum of world stature” will open its doors. This is made possible thanks to the green light from the municipal council for the replacement of the Thermenmuseum.
The new building was designed by Kraaijvanger Architects from Rotterdam and TomDavid Architects. The municipal government speaks of an “inspiring design” that contributes to the renewal of the center of Heerlen and the preservation of important cultural heritage. The remains of the bathhouse will, just as in the current Thermenmuseum, be incorporated into the new building to protect them.
							More and better
The presentation will also be expanded and improved: the new museum aims to take visitors in a modern and fascinating way into the world of the Romans in Coriovallum, the Roman name for Heerlen, and for the region.
The municipal council has also agreed to the establishment of the Het Romeins Museum Foundation. The foundation must raise 2 million euros to properly furnish the new museum. Companies or individuals who wish to contribute can visit www.hetromeinsmuseum.nl.
Cultural attraction
The municipal government is of course pleased: “This decision marks an important milestone in the transformation of the center of Heerlen and the preservation of heritage of national importance,” according to a press release. Responsible alderman Jordy Clemens of Heerlen points out the importance of the project: “We are delighted that together with the Het Romeins Museum foundation we can work on the preservation and presentation of our rich Roman heritage. This project will not only provide a new home for the Roman past, but also form a cultural attraction for residents and visitors of Heerlen and the region.”
In the coming period, the municipality will work out the detailed planning for the new building. For the time being, the Roman bathhouse and its rich history can still be admired in the Thermenmuseum. However, the museum will eventually have to close to make the new construction possible. A temporary museum will then be set up in the city.
