In the Roman Quarter in Heerlen, you discover a city beneath the city. Right under your feet lies Coriovallum, a Roman settlement of considerable size. By digging deeper into Heerlen’s past, two thousand years of history come to the surface. Archaeological sites, art, architecture and Roman excavations take you back to the time of the Romans. Discover the origin of the city of Heerlen at the crossroads of two important Roman roads and admire the “Night Watch” of Dutch archaeology with the Roman route.
Launch of the experience route
On Saturday 11 July, the Roman route was opened entirely in style by Jordy Clemens (Alderman of Heritage Heerlen), Mathea Severeijns (Director IBA Parkstad) and Anya Niewierra (General Director Visit Zuid-Limburg).
Walking tour through the Roman Quarter
Go explore on your own, follow in the footsteps of the Romans and really get to know the Roman Quarter. Visit Zuid-Limburg developed, together with the Municipality of Heerlen, a convenient city walk that leads you right through the Roman Quarter and past all the highlights. The walk is available for €1 at the Visit Zuid-Limburg (web)shops and at various shopkeepers in the Roman Quarter.
An optimal experience
To truly bring the Roman Quarter to life, several podcasts have been developed so visitors can fully immerse themselves in Roman Heerlen, there is a Geocaching route to discover the past in a playful way, and several inspiration screens have been installed on site.
